Baralacha La drive
Lovely drive of about 1.5 - 2 hrs on the highway to Leh, go all the way up to the majestic Baralacha La (4850 M / 16000 ft) and see the turquoise hued ponds: Suraj Tal & Deepak Tal.
Shingo La drive
This mountain pass at 5100 M / 17000 ft is the gateway to the Zanskar region of Ladakh. An exquisite and little explored drive of about 2 hrs will take you through a pristine & beauteous valley before bringing you up to the spectacular Shingo La.
A further drive of about 4 hrs will bring one to Kurgiyakh, the first settlement in Zanskar. We can organize a night of bespoke mobile camping here; we would require prior intimation of a fortnight to organize this. Do note that the drive ahead of Shingo La requires a 4 X 4 / AWD.
The Riverside experience
A short stroll from the Khar via alluring farmland will bring you down to the Bhaga River; get mesmerized views of the mountains above and spend time strolling around by the river, see the unique flora with bird life. If you are lucky you may see a snow trout too in the shallow waters.
From the banks of the river one can take a ride on the Jhula to the other side. Once you cross the river, you can walk either towards Tino or Jispa. Both sides have amazing views and during season the air is redolent with the fragrance of medicinal plants which abound in this mountain side. Do note that for this you need to tell our property manager at least 24 hrs in advance so that he could arrange for people to pull the cabin across and back.
A picnic lunch by the riverside is a not-to-be-missed experience!
Walk to Gemoor Gompa
A 15 minute stroll from the property will bring you to Gemoor Gompa – built about 300 yrs back, it is the largest in the Bhaga Valley. Known for meditation and retreat this monastery is historically affiliated to the one in Hemis.
Hike to Khangsar Khar
This is a longish but rewarding hike that will take up to 4/5 hours (return). Khangsar Khar is the ancestral home of the Thakurs of Lahaul and served as the seat of power for the Thakurs who where the rulers of Lahaul till independence in 1947. The Khar is 350 yrs old and in its prime had 108 rooms. The structure, though somewhat in a bad condition, has a functional family chapel with outstanding statues, Thangkas and religious texts. The guests can return either by road or they can walk down from Srangbar village back to Gemoor Khar.
Walk to Mangalak Petroglyphs
Petroglyphs are quite common in Ladakh but in Lahaul this is the only one. Petroglyphs are carvings by hunter- gatherers and herdsmen who roamed these stretches during prehistoric times. They are on one single large rock within the Gemoor Khar estate. The walk is along the main road towards Keylong and after a km one has to descend towards the fields below. The walk can be completed in an hour’s time. This is also very nice for picnics and outdoor photography.
Outdoor Camping in Miyar Valley
A 3 hrs drive will get you past Udaipur to the hamlets of Shukto – Khanjar. Beyond lies the glorious Miyar Valley, often referred to as the Yosemite of India! An hour’s hike will bring you to a lovely meadow where we can oragnize a night of bespoke outdoor camping; you could also hike further up into the valley and do another night of camping. We would require prior intimation of a fortnight to set this up for you.
Monasteries & Temples of Lahaul
You could do a beautiful drive of about 2.5 hrs each way to see the enticingly poised Guru Ghantal Gompa (near Tandi) and then an offbeat one past Udaipur to see the ancient & hidden temples of Mrikula Devi & Trilokinath.
